If local boosters had succeeded in the late 1800s, another Mississippi River tributary, the St. Croix River on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border upriver from Prescott, Wis., would have connected the Mississippi with the Great Lakes.

Following a spring ritual, thousands of motorcyclists ride from the Twin Cities to Winona on the third weekend in March and again in September. Once the ride commemorated the Mississippi spring flood of 1963, now the ride raises money for Gillette Children's Hospital and other causes. Residents and law enforcement along the river have learned to live with the noise and the crowds.
